The Visual Bible: Matthew is a 1993 motion picture portraying the life of Jesus as it is found in the Gospel of Matthew. The complete Gospel is presented word-for-word based on the New International Version of the Bible. It was directed by South African film maker Regardt van den Bergh and stars veteran actor Richard Kiley in the role of St. Matthew (who narrates the movie) and newcomer Bruce Marchiano as Jesus, Gerrit Schoonhoven as Peter. Marchiano portrays Jesus as having a sense of humour.

The film has been dubbed into various foreign languages including Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin.

he script has not even been written yet, but a film disputing the immaculate conception of Jesus is already causing controversy.  

Paul Verhoeven, who worked on the 1992 film Basic Instinct, will direct the film which will suggest that Jesus is not the son of God and instead he was conceived after his mother Mary was raped by a Roman soldier. 

The film will be based on Verhoeven's 2010 book, Jesus of Nazareth, which discounts the events commonly attributed to the life of Christ.

The Passion of the Christ (sometimes referred to as The Passion) is a 2004 American film directed by Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel asJesus Christ. It depicts the Passion of Jesus largely according to the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also draws on other devotional writings, such as those disputedly attributed to Anne Catherine Emmerich.

The film covers the final 12 hours of Jesus' life, beginning with the Agony in the Garden and ending with a brief depiction of his resurrection. Flashbacks of Jesus as a child and as a young man with his mother, giving the Sermon on the Mount, teaching the Twelve Apostles, and at the Last Supper are some of the images depicted. The dialogue is entirely in reconstructed Aramaic and Latin with vernacular subtitles.

The film was a major commercial hit, grossing in excess of $600 million during its theatrical release, becoming the highest grossing R-rated film of all time. The film has also been highly controversial and received mixed reviews, with some critics claiming that the extreme violence in the movie "obscures its message." Catholic sources have questioned the authenticity of the non-biblical material the film drew on.
